Hi, I’m Lee Frederiksen. Today I want to talk to you a little bit about the value of trade associations. And by trade associations I’m talking about those kinds of associations that are not professional. They’re not like the AICPA, or something that’s about you as a professional.

They are about industries and often times trade associations are about the industries that your clients belong to. Now these are great marketing venues and there’s some big benefits to it.

The first and probably the foremost one is it’s a target rich environment. If you are in the trade association where your prime clients are, you’ve got them everywhere you turn. So it’s a great place for just about any marketing you do.

The second big benefit is the market intelligence or the research you can do – the way you can find out about what’s going on in an industry. And most importantly, what are the issues that people are concerned about? What’s on their mind? How can the kind of services you offer address some of those issues and help them?

The third thing, of course, and this makes perfect sense is the face to face interaction. You are right there in that target rich environment. You have all those people around you. It’s a perfect place for networking. It’s a perfect place to establish relationships. But here’s a tip, too. Make sure when you do that, that you make appointments ahead of time which really maximizes the productivity of your meetings at these things.

The fourth thing I want to talk about is speaking opportunities. This is a great opportunity to demonstrate your expertise. And what our research shows is it’s the single best way to generate leads. Speaking engagements at the appropriate trade association – it’s a winner. You should look for those opportunities.
